Building with the Arts in Mind

Tapestry Charter School began in 2001 with a focus on strong academics and an eye toward the arts. Arts instruction is part of our mission and we offer a wide variety of hands-on experiences to our students. Students engage in the visual arts, media and technology, dance, writing, music and theater, with talented on-staff art teachers who bring focus to these various forms. We enhance the program with after school clubs and visiting professional artists who teach workshops on site. We also create community experiences for students through fieldwork, and attendance at exhibits and performances at cultural institutions throughout our region. In our school’s nine-year history, arts programming has become increasingly sophisticated and is expanding to match the needs of students in our high school. We are bringing back the successful School In A Museum program for our 2/3 students as well as our 4th grade Poetry & Art classes. For the first time we have a lower school Dancers Workshop, and a high school dance club.

One of our newest additions is Museum Studies. This program brings high school and middle school students to local galleries and museums for fieldwork relating to careers, designing exhibits, and for understanding the commitment cultural institutions have to the community to tie in with expeditionary learning benchmarks. The kick-off for the spring Chemistry of Art science elective will be a moderated panel discussion of artists; the Tapestry Music Collective is going strong, and high school arts intensives are placing students in week long concentrations in the arts and other vocations. Under the direction of Director of Arts Education, Hannah Raiken-Schulman, arts integration is growing and will get a boost at our new facility opening next year on Great Arrow Avenue. Our teachers have been working with architects to finalize classroom needs as we plan increased programming. We look forward to Tapestry’s first stage, new dance studio, music room, and visual arts space.
